Working from Home: Safer—and Better?

With so many of us staying home due to the current coronavirus pandemic, working from home has never been more prevalent. The social stigma attached to it has actually reversed; it is now more socially acceptable to stay home than it is to go to an office. Before the outbreak, it was assumed that #WFH really meant hanging out on social media all day, taking naps, and binge-watching your favorite tv series. Although we can’t say that none of these things are happening, we can say that working from home still tends to result in more productivity and creativity than working in an office. You just need to keep a couple of things top of mind to make the most of your home office environment.

Productivity + Creativity

The New Yorker published a cartoon that explained it best: a man in his pajamas, working from home and exclaiming, My God . . . those meetings really could all have been e-mails. When we work from home, we naturally switch to written communication as our primary mode of interaction. This allows us to communicate asynchronously. We can respond to an email or a Slack message when it makes sense for us and our schedules, which leads us to be more productive at home than we are at the office. Who knew?

Additionally, stepping away from the corporate world facilitates creative thinking. As creative professionals, our Diace Designs team knows this well. A traditional office environment rewards rule-following and systematic, standardized processes. Creativity thrives on the exact opposite. When we work from home, we can create our own schedules more freely. We can take in additional sources of inspiration and work with fewer distractions.

Distractions

Speaking of distractions, let’s address the elephant in the room. Is working from home really just an excuse to watch endless TikTok videos? Definitely not. Anyone who would take advantage of a home office environment is more than likely displaying the same behavior at the office. Even when we show up to a big building with an HR department and a supervisor in the next cubicle, we still have our phones and access to data. There’s no stopping a determined social media addict from getting their Facebook or Instagram fix—even AT the office.

Take It from Us

Diace Designs knows what it’s like to work remotely. As long as you have all of your documents backed up and the ability to access them anywhere, working from home should never impede your performance. Whether it’s from a home office or an airport terminal, we’ve been there and done that. Physical distances have not stopped us from tackling some of the most complex projects imaginable with team members separated by hundreds or even thousands of miles.

So stay home, stay safe, and stay connected. We’re all in this together.
