Designing Better Infographics

Infographics are a visual representation of data. That data may be simple or complex, but in either case, an infographic will draw more attention to it. Creating an infographic can be as simple as using Microsoft Excel to auto-generate a bar chart. Designing better infographics, however, requires more effort. In this post, we’ll review a few ways you can design better infographics that are more eye-catching, more engaging, and more accessible.

Find the Story in the Data

Accuracy is the cornerstone of a great infographic; rather than weaving your own story around the data, find the story that is already there. Infographics are so powerful that, in the wrong hands, they can be used to manipulate opinions and beliefs. Don’t fall into this trap! Analyze the data to find the story, and then use your infographics to tell that story in a memorable way.

Get Creative!

Engaging infographics tell a story in a creative way. The Diace Designs team loves to find innovative ways to represent data, but we also love to visually represent information that isn’t traditionally considered “data.” For example, we recently created a roadmap of events for a client. Rather than using a standard calendar format, we designed a meandering path connected by footsteps to lead readers on a journey through the upcoming occasions. Even a simple line graph can be fascinating with the right combination of color and movement. Remember to apply the principles of good design to your infographics, and you’ll be one step closer to a captivating infographic.

Make Your Infographics Accessible

According to WHO, there are 1.3 billion people living with vision impairment worldwide. Making your infographics accessible means leaving text as text (rather than embedding text as an image) so that it can be read digitally by screen readers. It also means using high-contrast colors for those with limited sight. When creating an infographic for the web, consider building it with HTML and CSS rather than uploading it as an image file. This will not only allow the graphic to be read by screen readers, but it will also help with your SEO and mobile optimization. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Anyone can make a bar chart, but to design an effective, high-quality infographic takes skill. Diace Designs has the skills you need to turn your data into a standout infographic that captivates your audience. Interested to see what we can do? Contact us!
