3 Common Branding Mistakes
As a design company, branding mistakes make us cringe—especially when they are easily avoidable. Branding is a critical element to communicating your expertise and professionalism to potential customers. Brand missteps can undermine your company’s authority. In this blog post, we will cover 3 common branding mistakes that we see all the time and how you can avoid them.
1. Not optimizing your website for mobile
Optimizing your website for mobile is becoming more critical every day. An increasing number of your website visitors are viewing your site on their smartphone; if they need to pinch and zoom and scroll left and right to read the text on your site, you’ve probably lost a customer. It sends the message that your company is not keeping up with modern technology and trends.
As a general rule, a website should only have one column of text when viewed on a phone. In addition, your font size should be about the same size as text printed in a standard piece of printed material (i.e., a magazine or newspaper). For most fonts, the optimum size is 16px.
2. Putting too much information on your business card
Another branding mistake that sends potential customers the wrong message is putting too much information on your business card. Keep it simple! Make sure that you have the most critical information and leave off the rest. Chances are, the person taking your business card will visit your website anyway. As long as your site’s Contact and About pages are thorough, there is no need to crowd your business card with multiple phone numbers, fax numbers, and a company bio. Keeping your business card information short and to the point makes your company look modern, and it sends a subconscious signal that you will be easy to work with.
3. Improperly formatting your email signature
Improperly formatting your email signature can be a nightmare for your clients and vendors. When images in your signature are not correctly formatted, they get sent as attachments. That means that every email you send will have attachments, making it nearly impossible for your recipient to find important documents in an email thread. Thankfully, there’s a simple fix. If you’re not tech savvy, you can use a free generator (such as WiseStamp) to easily create a properly formatted email signature.
